Kathmandu Durbar Square: Durbar means palace, where kings were once crowned and ruled from. Kathmandu has its Durbar Square at its heart. The charm of the old town blends well with traditional architecture in a rich cultural backdrop. The entire square was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979. The massive complex consists of three main squares, home to palaces, temples and courtyards. South of Basantapur Square is a former royal elephant stable, which today has souvenir stalls and leads to Freak Street (the lane still lives in the former glory of being the ultimate Hippie destination during the Flower Power era).
Bhaktapur (Bhadgaon): Bhaktapur is located about 20 km east of Kathmandu, a drive of around 30 minutes. It is an ancient town rich in culture and tradition. You can find traditional houses and beautiful monuments in Bhaktapur. The Square is one of the most charming architectural showpieces of the Valley, highlighting some of the finest medieval arts of Nepal. Bhaktapur’s Durbar (Royal) Square was added to the list of World Heritage Sites by UNESCO in 1979.
Boudhanath Stupa: This is the largest Buddhist Stupa in the world, located just beyond the Pashupatinath temple. It is built on a flat surface with various levels of terraces, painted in pastel colors and adorned with prayer flags. It is set in a Mandala design. Altogether 108 Buddha images and 147 insets of prayer wheels adorn the base of the huge circular edifice. The settlement of Boudhanath has the largest community of Tibetans, twelve thousand in all.
